Overview
Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) parameters are five variants of URL parameters used by marketers to track the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns across traffic sources and publishing media. In VWO Engage (formerly PushCrew), we use three variants of URL parameters.

In the One-Time tab present under the Campaigns. Click on Show UTM parameters
Here, you have provision for UTM Source, UTM Medium, UTM Campaign, which are the three variants of URL parameters.
- UTM Source: Identifies which site sent the traffic, and is a required parameter.
- UTM Medium: Identifies what type of link was used, such as cost per click, email, or Push Notifications.
- UTM Campaign: Identifies a specific product promotion or strategic campaign.
How to use the UTM Parameters
Let's consider an example: You are an e-commerce platform running an offer for 5 days, and you have planned to send out 2 notifications per day.
-
Craft your notification and name the campaign Offer-5days. For the first notification, set the UTM Medium to PN_Day1_1, where:
PN = Push Notification
Day1 = Day 1 of the campaign
1 = First notification sent that day
Update the UTM Medium for each subsequent notification based on the campaign day and the notification sequence. For example, the second notification on Day 1 would be PN_Day1_2, and the first notification on Day 2 would be PN_Day2_1.
- In your Google Analytics Account, under the Acquisition Tab > Campaigns > All Campaigns, you will find your Push Notification Campaign. Click on the Offer-5days to see the individual Notification’s performance.
- You can assign a goal value in dollars to tie each notification to some monetary value. This system would help you calculate the ROI for each notification.
